Laporta: “Expect Barcelona Renovation”

Newly appointed Barcelona President Joan Laporta has teased the media and fans alike on impending changes at the club.

The season ends on a downer for Spanish giants Barcelona who given their loss to Celta Vigo last time out, see them with nothing left to play for this season.

They enter the final weekend of the season out of the La Liga title race after letting a promising position slip with a series of under-par results.

President Laporta expressed his frustration at how the season has ended for the Blaugrana, stating that much needed changes are imminent.

Taking over at the helm of the club in January, Laporta has been faced with having to come up with ways of dealing with Barca’s rising financial debt and several other issues at the club.

He stated that “necessary” decisions would have to be taken in other to change the fortunes of the club.

“A cycle has come to an end and we are working on a renewal process,” Laporta told the media at a Diario Sport event.

“I said that I’d evaluate at the end of the season depending on the results and performances. From next week, you will see several decisions which must be taken. We have to work hard to build a competitive team to win league titles and Champions Leagues.

“When I speak of a cycle coming to an end or about renovation work, it’s because it’s what I believe must be done,” he said.

“We won the Copa del Rey, which we are proud of, but we were knocked out of the Champions League early and have lost La Liga incomprehensibly from my point of view.”

Dutch manager Ronald Koeman may be one of the casualties of the impending changes as expectations since his takeover haven’t been delivered.

Laporta will also be forced to address Lionel Messi’s contract situation at the club. The Argentine is mooted to make his decision on whether to remain at the club or move elsewhere when his contract expires in the summer.
