Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has given his take on how the relationship between players and managers should be.
After securing his third Premier League title with the club and also the League Cup, Guardiola has stated that he has had to make tough decisions pertaining to squad selection.
He admitted that it was difficult to please players as some of them were not happy not being selected, hinting they might decide to reevaluate their futures because of it.
“There are players that accept one typical situation in the team and there are other ones that don’t accept it,” Guardiola told the Daily Mail.
“When they don’t accept sometimes not playing, you can sustain that for one season – a short period – but not for a long period. It’s impossible.
“In that position, we have to change. We’ll see at the end of the season. We’ll talk with them and we’ll be clear, they’ll be clear, and we’ll decide the best for the players.”
Manchester City will have a chance at winning their first-ever Champions League trophy when they face Chelsea next week. The Catalan acknowledges the importance of the match and states he would be strict to decide the best players for the game.
“This is the toughest moment,” he said. “That is why the relationship between the players and the manager has to have a little bit of distance because you cannot have too close a relationship when you have to make decisions that [affect their] careers.
“Sometimes I am unfair to them but it is what it is. I don’t have another solution. That is why they are lucky to find a manager who rotates a lot.”
When questioned about the availability of Sergio Aguero, he said: “He has niggles, he felt something before Newcastle. Today he is still not fit. Hopefully, he will be ready for Everton. I hope so, I hope so.
“If he was fit, I would say I’d be cold,” Guardiola added. “I have to take a decision which is the best to win that game. If Sergio is fit he is going to help us, that is for sure, but it’s the final of the Champions League.”
