Nigeria and Barcelona Women forward Asisat Oshoala has become the first Nigerian to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
The 26-year-old is also the first African in history to win the competition.
Oshoala was introduced in the 71st minute as Barcelona defeated Chelsea 4-0 in the final of the most coveted club competition in Europe.
Melanie Leupolz turned the ball into her own net in the first minute to put Barcelona in front at the Gamla Ullevi.
Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati and Caroline Graham Hansen all scored first half goals to put the tie to bed against Emma Hayes’ women.
Oshoala replaced Spanish midfielder Jennifer Hermoso in the second half as Barcelona continued their quest for more goals.
She soon grabbed a fifth goal for her side in the closing stages of the game, but her effort didn’t count as it was ruled out for offside.
Barcelona ran out comprehensive winners on the night, adding to Oshoala’s impressive trophy cabinet.

True to her word prior to the game, Oshoala claimed that Barca had learned from their final defeat to Lyon in 2019 where they had to settle for a runners-up medal.
“Now, we have the experience of how European football is and also how a top game like this is played,” she told the media.
“We are a better team now than we were two years ago.”
In May, she scored Barcelona’s 100th goal in the UEFA Women’s Champions League during their 3-0 win over English side, Manchester City in the quarter-final first-leg tie played in Barcelona.
Oshoala was also ranked No. 27 in the list of world best women’s footballers in 2021 by ESPN.
“Oshoala is probably Africa’s most accomplished female footballer, having won the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award four times, the latest in 2019,” the American media outfit wrote.
“That was the year she signed with Barcelona, where she’s since won four titles and a UEFA Women’s Champions League runners-up medal. Oshoala is exceedingly accurate inside the penalty area and is always the teammate you want taking the final touch.
“Oshoala has continued to impress for the Catalan giants, averaging a goal per game since arriving in Spain, and now that Nigeria have reiterated their status as the premier women’s side on the continent, Oshoala is undeniably their premier player.”
Go on conquering the world Oshoala! Nigerians and Africans are with you!
