Manchester City have been crowned champions of the Premier League following Manchester United’s defeat to Leicester on Tuesday.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 to the Foxes at Old Trafford effectively handing the title over to their city rivals.

Teenager Luke Thomas opened the scoring with his first-ever Premier League goal. However, the visitors were soon pegged back shortly after Amad Diallo linked up with Mason Greenwood to grab the equaliser.

It was however the Foxes who would run away with maximum points as Caglar Soyuncu put the visitors in front once more in the second half.

Known for their ability to come back after going down as they’ve shown countless times this season, sadly it was not the case for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men as the game ended as it was.

With the loss, it meant that the Premier League title has now been decided at Old Trafford for a record sixth time, three of which have awarded the trophy to a side other than Manchester United (Arsenal in 2001-02 and Manchester City in 2017-18 & 2020-21).

It is Manchester City’s fifth Premier League title, with only Manchester United winning more in the competition’s history (13).

It also means Pep Guardiola has won the title in three of his five seasons managing the club.

The title is City’s seventh one in history which ranks them fifth in England’s overall list of top-tier champions, behind Manchester United (20), Liverpool (19), Arsenal (13) and Everton (nine).

The way Manchester City won the league is quite laudable. Earlier in the season, Pep Guardiola endured his worst ever start to a Premier League campaign.

When it seemed they were all but ruled out of the title race, the Catalan did not despair, stating “there are a lot of points left to play for”.

True to his word, City managed to string a run of 21 wins in a row to pull well clear at the top while others fumbled.

Their horrible start to the season was largely due to their leaky defence at the beginning of the season.

But ever since their recruitment of Portuguese defender Ruben Dias, City were unstoppable.

Although they had injury issues and positive coronavirus cases amongst their players, Manchester City overcame them all to reclaim the title from Liverpool.

Reacting to his side’s title win Guardiola said: “This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other. This was the hardest one.

“We will always remember this season for the way that we won. I am so proud.”

With the Premier League and Carabao Cup in the bag, Manchester City will be aiming to win the treble when they face Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea in the all-English Champions League final on May 29.
