Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero has issued an apology for his penalty miss in Saturday’s game against Chelsea.

Chelsea fought back from a goal down to snatch a 2-1 win deep into stoppage time at the Etihad.

The hosts took the lead in the first half through Raheem Sterling and soon had the chance to double their lead just before half time via a penalty.

Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour was adjudged to have fouled Gabriel Jesus in the box so the referee awarded a penalty to the Cityzens.

However, stepping up to take the penalty, Aguero fluffed the opportunity to give his side the added advantage.

His weak attempt at a panenka was calmly saved by Edouard Mendy who stayed still in goal.

Hakim Ziyech soon equalised for the visitors in the second half. They also had three goals ruled out for offside.

But Tuchel’s side would have the last laugh as they grabbed a deserved victory in the 92nd minute.

Shortly after the match, Sergio Aguero, perhaps feeling a bit guilty for his side’s loss, issued an apology for his penalty miss.

Aguero wrote on Twitter: “I would like to apologise to my teammates, staff and supporters for missing the penalty. It was a bad decision and I take full responsibility.”

It is however worthy of note that City have had a poor record of penalty misses this season.

As many as four different Man City players have missed a penalty in the league this season, more than any other side. De Bruyne, Gundogan and Sterling also missed penalties.

The loss put any thought of title celebrations on hold as Man City needed a win to be crowned Premier League champions.

They will now have to wait to win their next match or hope rivals Manchester United lose their own match in order to be crowned champions.
