Mason Mount has hit back out at Toni Kroos over his comments in an interview before the Chelsea match against Real Madrid.

Chelsea ran away 2-0 winners against their visitors at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. The win secured a 3-1 aggregate win and booked their place in what is set to be an all-English final against Manchester City.

Chelsea were clearly the better side in London as they created more chances than their opponents. Timo Werner opened up the scoring in the first half and Mason Mount wrapped it up for the hosts with minutes left of the game.

The obvious quality divide is perhaps what led Mason Mount to throw a dig back at Toni Kroos for his comments.

What did Kroos say?

The Real Madrid midfielder was asked if he had any opponent he felt he should be wary of in the semi-final tie.

“In my 15 years playing football, I never lost sleep [over a player],” the 31-year-old stated.

“They showed in Madrid that they play as a team. They have a German coach so that doesn’t surprise me. They defend well and have pace up front, those are their strengths,” he stated.

What was Mason Mount’s reply?

Mason Mount seemed to have taken the comments to heart as he wasted no time in recalling them in his post match interview.

“I saw one of their players [Toni Kroos] say before that he doesn’t lose sleep over individuals,” Mount said.

“But as a team, they need to lose sleep over us as a team. We give so much, we defend for our lives. You saw that in not many chances that we gave away. We are solid and we need to keep that going.”

Reacting to the game in general, Mount told BT Sport, “It was a tough, tough game,”

“They were going to come and give it everything but we worked hard. We should’ve probably had about five [goals]! But the most important thing is we won tonight. We want to go into every game winning it.

“I can’t put it into words. Great performance tonight.

“It was 1-0 but that really didn’t matter because if they score, they were back in the game. To get that one late on, you can see by the celebrations, it was a massive goal for us and gave us breathing space in the last five minutes.

“We gave everything and we had that desire to win first half. We had a couple of opportunities where we won the ball and should’ve scored but we got the one late on and it’s great.”

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta was also in high spirits after the match.

“We have a fantastic squad, everybody pushes hard in training, to be together, to fight for everyone and to help each other. This is massive and we have created a strong group. We have plenty of things to fight for,” he said.

“It’s a Champions League final!” Azpilicueta added. “We have played them [Manchester City] lots of times but it’s the Champions League final. We believe in ourselves, we know we have to work hard but we are ready for it.

“We haven’t won anything yet. Hopefully we’ve got two massive cup finals and hopefully we can win.”
