Last season’s Champions League runners-up PSG, would be hoping to grab another final spot this season. But to be able to do that, PSG will first have to see off Manchester City in the semi-final, a test that will not be easy.
Both sides have never won a Champions League trophy. This fact underlines just how important it is to these clubs. Progress will be a step in the direction needed to fulfil their dream even if it comes at the expense of the other.
Having recently been crowned League Cup champions, Manchester City have their sights set on the ever-elusive Champions League trophy.
But despite having two Champions League titles under his belt, Pep Guardiola has never reached a Champions League final without Barcelona. The farthest he has gone in the competition with Bayern and Manchester City is reaching the semi-final stage.
He would be hoping to break that jinx this season but there’s a small problem of PSG who are semi-finalists for consecutive seasons.
His counterpart Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping to progress to only his second final as a manager. With the Ligue 1 title not guaranteed this season, there is perhaps added pressure to succeed in this competition.
With both sides with a lot at stake, we are prepared for an exciting game but who do the stats favour?
Here are the most interesting facts of the match:
- PSG are winless in their three previous meetings against Man City in European competitions (D2 L1).
- In their only previous UCL knockout tie, Man City eliminated PSG, advancing 3-2 on aggregate in the 2015-16 quarter-final. Kevin De Bruyne was the match-winner in that game at the Etihad.
- This is Man City’s fourth semi-final in European history but have only progressed to a final once, where they won their only European trophy to date, the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970.
The above stats seem to favour Manchester City over PSG but do they have what it takes to overcome Mbappe, Neymar and co.? What are your predictions for the game?
